Search engine optimization (SEO) is a process that requires constant effort and progressive work. It is not a magic wand that will rank your website on the top page with a single swing.

“I can rank your website on the #1 position in the search engines.”

No professional SEO consultant will promise their clients #1 position on the search engines because they don't own the search engines. And if one does promise you, do ensure that they do rank your website for some keywords that have little competing pages with no signnifcant traffic volume. Eg. your business name.

“You’ll get tons of website traffic.”

Website traffic is a very important factor because this is the initial objective that everyone is looking forward to. However, if the incoming traffic is trash traffic that do not convert into sales leads, what is the point of having them? Make sure your SEO service provider provides you with a weekly/monthly traffic analysis report and check them against your online sales conversion. Are they converting well?

Being scammed for a few hundred dollars is not the major problem in search engine optimization. What you should be worrying is the fact that these rogue SEO consultant or firm do not possess the correct skills and might just get your website penalised or even banned from the search engines which will affect your online reputation.
