This is the most common question asked by most local business owners during my consultation visits for the past 1 week. So i was thinking to myself that it might be better if i could just write a post explaining the purpose and potential of search engine optimization. This same theory is also applicable to search engine optimization or SEO where techniques and skills are put together to ensure that a particular website is highly visible in the search engine results.

Internet Users or Searchers' Behaviours
We need to understand the behaviours of internet users or searchers before moving into search engine optimization. What do i mean by highly visible?

HIGHLY VISIBLE = TOP 10 Results (1st Page)
VISIBLE = No. 10 - 20 Results (2nd Page)
TRANSLUCENT = No. 20 -30 Results (3rd Page))
INVISIBLE = Anything more than the No. 30 Results (4th Page and Beyond)

Ask yourself this question: How often do you exceed the 3rd page of the results when searching for information using the search engines?

Average searchers will seldom go beyond the 2nd page of the search results when looking for information online. This is mainly because search engines' algorithmns are getting more and more complex to the extent that they are able to display the most relevant results to their searchers within the first two pages. With that in mind, most local business must be at least on the Top 20 results in order to reach out to their targeted audiences and generate higher sales leads.

Scenerio 1 :

You are the owner of Web Hosting Company A and have approximately 1000 competitors in your local market. Your company has received numerous Quality and Service Assurance Awards from the Government Bodies and has been in the industry since 1998. However, your website is still nowhere to be found within the Top 30 search results when searching for the keyword "Web Hosting".

What Is The Overall Impact On Your Business?
The keyword "Web Hosting" has a monthly search volume of approx. 22,000 searches in Singapore. By doing some mathematical calculations, there are almost 730 searches per day which means you are losing out close to 400 potential sales leads to your Top 30 online competitors every single day (Estimated based on search volumes).
